Just got word from the Illiniwek Ranger that they will be closing the trails periodically through the winter as Bald Eagles migrate and roost at the property. The hike/bike trails pass by many popular roosting spots and the chance of disturbance is high because eagles are very skittish around people. Closures will be focused on very cold days which are more stressful to the eagles and during weekdays.
In general:
- Trails will be opened on weekends, when conditions allow, even when eagles are present.
- Trails will be closed during weekdays when a significant number of eagles are present in the park and/or weather conditions are especially harsh.
If conditions at other local trails are good but the trails at IFP are still closed this is probably the reason.
