Introducing the Sunduro, a small Enduro event featuring the area's most technical trails at Sunderbruch Park.

2023 Sunduro results are published here.

    Overview

We're changing formats this year for our second race event. The Sunduro is a small Enduro style event featuring the area's most technical singletrack trails at Sunderbruch Park. What's an Enduro you may be asking? Not quite a Cross Country race, not quite a Downhill race, but somewhere in-between. Enduro consists of timed, primarily downhill, stages with non-timed transfer routes in between. Riders must complete all stages and transfers under their own power, on the same bike, self-supported, and before the stage cutoff times or risk disqualification. Times for each stage are combined for a final finish time.

    Event Details

    Registration

Homebase will be at the shelter near the main parking lot. Registration & bib pickup will open 8:30am Sunday 5/7 and close once the field of 60 riders is filled or 30 mins prior event start (9:30am). Online registration (click here to register) will close Thursday 5/4 at 11:59pm. Riders will be assigned a number plate which must be affixed to the bike and visible from the front for timing recorders. This event is open to the public. A $30 entry fee covers event insurance and other expenses with the remaining proceeds going towards funding MTB trails in the QC area. No payouts. Men's and Women's categories only. Maybe trophies...

    Starting Location

Riders will mass start at 10:00am from the paved trail near the parking lot. Riders must finish the final transfer and arrive at the final stage by 12:00pm.

    Timed Stages

    • Stage 1 - Comlara to Kickapoo Down [0.38 mi]: Gentle downhill with open flowing corners gives way to a brake screeching downhill with drops, roots, berms, and more.
    • Stage 2 - Loud Thunder Twisties to 2nd Creek Crossing [0.37 mi]: Tight technical turns open up to a full speed downhill run across the first creek crossing. A short leg burning climb will start the second rooty downhill to the finish just after the next creek crossing.
    • Stage 3 - Jubilee Downhill [0.25 mi]: Fast and flowy with big wood berms, jumps/drops, and high speed narrow exposed singletrack deep in the ravines.
    • Stage 4 - Jump Line to Blue Mound Bottom [0.42 mi]: Large drops, most with ride-arounds, jumps and the most technical downhill sections at the park.

    Transfers

    • Start to Stage 1 [0.58 mi]: Start on the paved path and connect with Kickapoo Up to climb to the top of Comlara. Follow Comlara loop until it crosses the paved bike path for the second time.
    • Stage 1 to Stage 2 [1.15 mi]: Climb up Kickapoo Up and follow Comlara to Farmdale and head into Loud Thunder trail.
    • Stage 2 to Stage 3 [0.60 mi]: Climb out of L.T. take a right onto Farmdale and arrive shortly at the start of Jubilee.
    • Stage 3 to Stage 4 [1.51 mi]: Finish Jubilee trail and follow Farmdale Loop to the start of the Jumpline trail.
    • Stage 4 to Finish [0.53 mi]: Climb out of Blue Mound and take Kickapoo Down back to paved bike path and return to the starting area.

    • Total Transfer Distance: 4.3 mi

    Volunteers

We'll need help timing and recording each stage. Ideally three people per stage or ~12 people in total. If you'd like to help out contact us here: via email or respond to the volunteer post over on the forums.
    • Starter: Positioned at the start of each stage and will coordinate release of riders while in communication with the Timer via radio.
    • Timer: In charge of maintaining the clock and signaling to Starter when to release riders.
    • Recorder: Will keep track of rider starting and finishing times and compute the individual stage times for each rider.
    • Cleanup: Need a couple people to pull tape and course markings when the event is done.
    • Registration: Help racers sign up and hand out bib numbers to preregistered racers.

    FAQ

    • Can e-bikes participate? We're not currently supporting an e-bike category. Maybe in the future, but trying to keep it simple at the moment.
    • How seriously should I take this event? Not very seriously. Timing will be done to the nearest second and by stopwatch (no fancy wrist chips or timing mats). This is purely a social and fundraising event meant for fun. No MTB series points will be awarded.

    2023 Recap/Results

Perfect weather and newly refreshed trails made for a great day of racing. 32 entrants participated in the innaugural Sunduro with 30 finishing all stages. Racers and volunteers enjoyed lunch afterwards. 2023 Sunduro results are published here.

  • MTB Trail Etiquette

    • Ride Open Trails: Respect trail and road closures — ask a land manager for clarification if you are uncertain about the status of a trail. Do not trespass on private land. Obtain permits or other authorization as required. Be aware that bicycles are not permitted in areas protected as state or federal Wilderness.

    • Leave No Trace: Be sensitive to the dirt beneath you. Wet and muddy trails are more vulnerable to damage than dry ones. When the trail is soft, consider other riding options. This also means staying on existing trails and not creating new ones. Don't cut switchbacks. Be sure to pack out at least as much as you pack in.

    • Control Your Bicycle: Inattention for even a moment could put yourself and others at risk. Obey all bicycle speed regulations and recommendations, and ride within your limits.

    • Yield Appropriately: Do your utmost to let your fellow trail users know you're coming — a friendly greeting or bell ring are good methods. Try to anticipate other trail users as you ride around corners. Bicyclists should yield to other non-motorized trail users, unless the trail is clearly signed for bike-only travel. Bicyclists traveling downhill should yield to ones headed uphill, unless the trail is clearly signed for one-way or downhill-only traffic. In general, strive to make each pass a safe and courteous one.

    • Never Scare Animals: Animals are easily startled by an unannounced approach, a sudden movement or a loud noise. Give animals enough room and time to adjust to you. When passing horses, use special care and follow directions from the horseback riders (ask if uncertain). Running cattle and disturbing wildlife are serious offenses.

    • Plan Ahead: Know your equipment, your ability and the area in which you are riding and prepare accordingly. Strive to be self-sufficient: keep your equipment in good repair and carry necessary supplies for changes in weather or other conditions. Always wear a helmet and appropriate safety gear.
