    Default Busy Bike Lab

I was catching some grief this weekend from someone who will remain nameless (MilkMan) about my secretive winter building activities, so I figured I'd come clean.

As much as I love riding the sir9 SS, there've been quite a few times when I wished I had a geared hardtail, and converting the sir9 back and forth between SS and geared is kind of a hassle. My original thought was to maybe convert the sir9 back to a geared bike and try a belt drive SS. Then I found out that Bruce had a new Salsa titanium El Mariachi frame hanging in the shop. Hmmm... I've never had a titanium frame before...

    Tasty Salsa

Sweet frame, built by Lynskey in Tennessee. Took a while to wrangle all the components, build the wheels, etc, but I'm happy with how it turned out. It hasn't even left the house yet, only been ridden around the basement. So I'm dying over here! Needing some singletrack STAT!! More 50 degree days will put the hurt on this snow, we'll be out on the trails before you know it. I hope.

Anyone else been "busy" this winter?

I want a shop like that! Hell, my shop looks like... Hell...

Believe in yourself? Well sure, of course. But be aware that "believing in myself" has been the root cause of most of my injuries.

Rage is that a golf grip protecting the frame from chain junk?

Looks like a meticulously wrapped inner tube.

Ayup. I wrap pretty much all of my chainstays with used inner tubes. Don't like leaving them bare, and am not crazy about the Lizard Skin type of protector. Split a shot tube ("shot" to Rage means more than 4 patches) and wrap it 'round the chainstay to keep the chain slap from wrecking the stay. They'll usually rot after a couple years, then it's replaced with another. This years tubeless experiment threatens to jeopardize my tube supply in the long run, but I have a pretty good batch to keep me going for a while.

I have been busy in my bike shop, drooling over this bad boy. Been itching to get it on the trails.

Also, for the last few weeks I have been tinkering around with a bike for Ray's. Hey Schnaufer, what do you get when you cross a sheep and a donkey?

    A SHONKY!

    Anybody else?

Thanks Rage, yours too. Can't wait to see that one in person, looks sick. Got to mess with some bmx components on this build so that was a first for me. I like how it turned out, now I have to see how it jumps!
