Default Hansi Johnson from IMBA due to speak at 2011 Iowa Bicycle Summit - Jan. 29th 3PMish

Got word that Hansi Johnson from IMBA is going to be a speaker at the 2011 Iowa Bike Summit in Des Moines on Saturday, January 29th around 3PMish. It also looks like off-road riding and related topics are becoming permanent items amongst the agenda for the Iowa Bicycle Coalition (who puts on the Summit). SUPER COOL! Anyone interested in making the trek? Hansi has been an excellent contact for us and our Mtn Bike Fest, and I hear he is an excellent speaker and advocate for mtn biking. Post up if you want to attend. Maybe we can put a carload together. There is discussion about putting together a post-summit function – dinner, goldsprints, mayhem (still in the works by CITA).

The info from the http://www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/...clesummit/info website:

Want to make an impact on bicycle culture in Iowa? The Iowa Bicycle Summit is dedicated to producing low-cost, accessible education on building stronger bicycle communities. The Summit provides city engineers, planners and bicycle advocates with information on the best practices in bicycling for transportation and recreation. In addition to featuring presentations on bicycle education that fosters vibrant and healthy communities, the Summit will again join forces with RAGBRAI’s Ride Right safety meeting at the Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines. The Summit will conclude with the announcement of the 2011 RAGBRAI Route.

Friday, January 28th, 2011 Antonio Rosell will lead the facility design workshop. This day is designed to give city engineers and planners the tools to build and improve facilities for bicycling. The Iowa Bicycle Summit is the only formal education offered for bicycle facility design.

Saturday, January 29th sessions feature speakers presenting on topics including design innovation in transit model bike networks, safe routes to school, long-term trail and safe streets planning, innovations in bicycle bridges, green street infrastructure, promoting sustainable food and physical activity with youth, community bicycle clubs, cycling safety, bicycle injury rehabilitation, new marketing ideas such as bike-share programs, and urban dirt.

The Summit aims to build a model bicycle culture here in Iowa. It is the place where non-engineers and engineers can combine efforts needed to invest in bicycling-a simple solution to some of the major challenges societies face. It’s the place were expertise and innovation in building better bicycle communities comes together. As the premier network for those who want to promote and improve fast, cheap, healthy and green transportation and recreation, the Summit is sure to support people who want make the most out of urban and rural living and recreation.

Learning to build better bicycle communities takes time and experience, just as learning to ride does. The Summit is a chance to gain skills in advocating for, and developing, adequate provisions for bicyclist.
    I wanna ride!
