April is almost here and brings with it some exciting stuff!
For ladies who are beginners or Novice riders, we have an exciting opportunity for you! In the month of April, we will meet every Wednesday and Thursday evening at 5:30 PM at a local mtn bike trail system and go over the basics of mtn biking and then enjoy a group ride where we will put those skills into practice. Interested? Awesome! Intrigued? Awesome! Hesitant? What?! YOU are precisely the rider we are looking for. We are here for the newest of new riders as well as those with a bit more riding experience. Intermediate riders will not be challenged with the first sessions of the month, but please show anyway to help me help our less experienced riders (we will go for a faster-paced ride after the session concludes).
If the flood cooperates, we will meet at Sylvan Island on Wednesday and Thursday, April 6 and 7th (stay tuned to this link in case the island floods and we need to change meeting location). Our session will last one hour as a group but feel free to continue riding after that period of time. I will remain at the park in case you have questions or want to continue to work on targeted skills.
About NCLB:
These are mtn bike skills sessions created by women for women. The first few weeks, we will be covering the basics in the first 15 minutes of each session... shifting, braking, positioning. Then, we will get on the trails to start getting reacquainted with the feel of the bike. Lots of this is nothing more than saddle time, getting used to riding and developing a level of comfort with your bike and how it handles. We will ride some easier trails and then approach a few basic obstacles such as small logs to hop over, tight switch backs, negotiating roots, etc. Then as people's skill and confidence levels increase, we will start adding in more and more fun stuff like log piles, drops, BIG rocks and rock gardens (Sunderbruch Park), more challenging hills, whoop-D's, skinnies, etc.
What you need to bring: Your own mtn bike (a hybrid will not work), a helmet, hydration (water bottle, Camelbak, etc.), maybe a gel shot or Cliff bar or something, and enthusiasm. :)
A few dates of interest:
The Sylvan Island Stampede (MTN BIKE RACE) will be on Sunday, April 10th with the first race Novice race starting at 9 AM... hint hint... some of you should consider racing (or at least come out to the Island and watch the excitement). Stay tuned
Also mark your calendars for the Midwest Mtn Bike Festival at Scott County Park the weekend of June 24-26, 2011 (www.midwestmtbfest.com (http://www.midwestmtbfest.com)). Guaranteed to be an amazingly fun time! We have been working tirelessly for the last 6 months so that this event is a stellar representation of mtn biking in the Midwest (and FORC). There will be lots of riding, bicycle games, food, and camaradery. IMBA will also be present all weekend and will be offering presentations on Friday, June 24th about various club and land management topics. We will be teaching a Mtn Bike 101 course on Saturday, June 25th, at 9 AM (including a separate women's MTB 101). If you have even a modicum of interest in mtn biking, you will not want to miss this event! It's truly a really big deal!
