With the new forum, we don't have AG's post that had all the info about the upcoming FORC'n Ray's trip. I am sure he will repost here. John and I plan to drive down Thursday afternoon 2/20/09 as I want to participate in the ladies-only skills clinic on Friday.

In the meantime, check out this forum post which is a nice recap from the 2008 Dirt Rag Ladies Weekend at Ray's: http://www.spokejunkies.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=7176

Women's Weekend at Ray's Mtb Park in Cleveland, OH was a huge success. Held February 22, 23 and 24. The event was put on by Dirt Rag, along with all of the other sponsors of Ray's. If you have yet to make the pilgrimage out to Ray's, you need to. It is 97,000 sq ft of a mountain biker's heaven in the middle of winter. Offering something for everyone from beginners to experts. They even have a foam pit to perfect your back flips, and a full street course. Ladies and Gents were able to demo the latest and greatest FireEye Bikes and products.

There was a special "ladies only" session and clinic on Friday from 10 am to 4 pm. After 4 they let the gents back in. The rest of the weekend it was both ladies and gents riding all day. Ladies were able to ride free all weekend. Clinics were held covering all forms of riding, from basic pedaling skills to, whipping around on a pump track, taking 5 plus foot drops, to advanced jumping.

There were a total of 9 pro women around all weekend for coaching. Including Jill Kintner of GT bicycles, Kathy Pruitt of Jamis Bicycles, Canadian women's freeride legend Stephanie Nychka, Gale with GOFAST energy drink, Emily Johnston of Black Market, Lisa Myklak of Black Market, Tammy representing IMBA, Nina B a bmxer riding for Etnies, and of course Nadia Steinbrecher of FireEye Bike. Just to name a few. These ladies know how to shred a park! With such a star studded crew, it was no wonder the clinics went so smooth. A lot of the ladies who attended the clinics skills improved three fold in one day! The clinics were very laid back, with out pressure.

A raffle was held on Friday for the ladies right after lunch. This lucky lady won a set of FireEye Fire-8 pedals.

No bike event would ever be complete with out a party. Friday night PBR had a sweet little local band, and was giving out free swag.

Ladies mark your calendars for next year. Dirt Rag is already starting to plan for next year. All I can say so far is it is going to be bigger, and better. It will make the perfect winter getaway.

A big thank you goes out to all of the women who showed up this weekend, Ray's Mtb Park, Dirt Rag, and the rest of the sponsors of the park for a great weekend. Keep checking the FireEye website for information on next years Women's Weekend, and other events.

Friday, February 20th through 22nd. I have 3 rooms set aside for us that will accommodate 12 (4 in each room). The plan is to leave the QC around 8am Friday morning endure the 8 hour drive check into our rooms, them hit the park for a few hours. Leave and find a brewpub or 2. I have already located them also. At this point the interest has been very high and I’m sure there will be some that will want to check out the sites and sounds of Cleveland and some will want to just ride. With the Rock-n-Roll hall of Fame and at least 6 brew pubs I will be one wanting to look around a little.
Also one of the reasons I chose this weekend is that Dirt Rag will be their promoting a Ladies weekend. I have asked Ray about it and this is what he said “well ...on friday during the day, from 9am-4pm it is women only...clinics
,pros etc. The doors open to everyone at 5 on Friday and girls ride for free
all weekend. It's alot of fun. Can be a little busy between noon and 4 on
Saturday. other than that, a ton of fun. Hope to see ya, thanks, ray”
They had about 40 women show last year, in place that size I don’t it will make a lot of difference. And besides it sounds pretty cool.
Cost? Well this is what I can up with rooms are $59 pre night, Ray’s will be $47 for the weekend, Gas at $2 per gallon (who really knows what it will cost in Fed) in my van $33 pre person. TOTAL: $109.00 per person for the weekend. This does not include your food or beer!

So, we're probably looking at $350 a person with beer? :D

is this limited to the first 12 that confirm or is there a possibility that more rooms are available at the same hotel, maybe even close to the ones you already have? would love to go but total commitment at this point in the game is hard for me.

i'm sayin possibly at the moment...

Because I am going to participate in the women's-only skills clinic on Friday 2-20-09, John and I are going to take Thursday afternoon off from work and head down Thursday afternoon. I know the drive time is 8 hours. We may opt to drive 5 or 6 hours Thursday night, find a hotel along the way and then get up first thing Friday morning and finish the last couple hours to Cleveland.

By the time all you knobbies get there Friday afternoon / early evening, I'll be pooped from riding and getting all SKILLED... so I can take pictures and videos of y'all having fun Friday night. Then of course there will be beer and plenty of it for the Friday night encore.

One of the PAMBA ladies asked about the skills clinic registration. I talked to Ray in Cleveland. He says that there will be a "very loose registration" on their website eventually for us to sign up. He said more details should be posted in December. I will post up once I see that they are taking online registrations.

ok, with the holidays barely out of the way, i need to start making some firm plans for this trip. my mommy gave me money to help fund my fun for the weekend as my xmas gift. i saw somewherte that the weekend runs through monday. maybe on the forc calendar. i am planning on leaving here friday morning as originally talked about, and only plan on staying friday night in a hotel, getting up riding saturday and then leaving to come home sometime saturday evening.

I have a jeep grand cherokee that i will be driving and would be interested in any carpoolers that may wanna run the same schedule. just don't wanna leave mamma home with the kids for 4 days. may be my first and last forc trip.

i would like to be a part of the motel rooms that AG have reserved already if still possible and better yet, able to have roomiesto help deter costs. i am going on a very limited budget this time around.

anyone looking for a travel partner, post up. will also stay tuned for others' trip details...............

AG

The price I posted ($109 with out food or beer) is only for Friday through Sunday. I have not heard of any on just going for 2 days. You would spend more time on the road than in Cleveland. If you can't find 3 more people to ride with you, its probably going to cost you more. Something to think about.

dru_b

is there still room in your van or in someone elses car, and i kinda figured that about driving myself. you plan on being home around what time sunday?

ok, trip is getting nearrer, some information needed. clothing... rays requires long pants...... what about sleeves. not 100% sure there. gloves? required or recommended? what type of clothing do your forc'ers that have been there before recommend. what else do i NEED to take with me or what else do you stongly recommend?

this being my first real bike trip, not sure exactly what should make the trip with me.

thanks..........

Well lets see, Keep in mind Rays for the most part is not heated and seeing how it's going to be late Feb. Long sleeve and what ever else you need to keep warm. They all say bring flat pedals and I believe Rays has some pads you can use or rent. Other than that enough clothes, tooth brush and your favorite pellow (to snuggle with your favorite FORC with) you should be good to go.

The Fixxer
02-01-2009, 09:37 PM
I'd take long & short sleeves with you, it tends to heat up a bit as soon as you get riding. If you start to cool down you can always hit the xc course for a lap or the pump track.

Ray has shin and elbow/forearm guards that he hands out - no rental...at least it was like that for the '07 trip.

I remember being in a hoodie and running pants the first night and after about 10 minutes of riding I was down to a jersey and riding shorts - was just fine.

Fixxer and AG are correct - its chilly in the warehouse but you warm up quickly. So pack your bag with warm gear and just bring it with you.

DEFINITELY bring flat pedals. I tried my SPD's the first night and I about killed myself so first thing Saturday morning I bought some flats from Ray.

...and you'll probably want full-fingered gloves too.

OK, there is finally info posted on Dirt Rag's blog about the Womens Weekend at Ray's.
Women’s Weekend at Ray’s: The Sequel (http://www.dirtragmag.com/blogarific/rays-womens-weekend-2/)

The date has been set. Plans are being made. Dirt Rag and Ray’s MTB Park (http://www.raysmtb.com/) are throwing the second annual Women’s Weekend (http://www.dirtragmag.com/gal/showgallery.php?cat=702), Friday, February 20th through Sunday, February 22nd.

Spend Friday at Ray’s MTB participating in free clinics with professional women riders. We will have Ray’s MTB—revamped for 2009—to ourselves during the day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Riders of all skill levels are welcome! Chris Garrison from Trek (http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/) will be on hand with demo bikes. Riding make you hungry? We’ll have lunch provided by Chipolte Mexican Grill (http://www.chipotle.com/), and snacks from Nature’s Bin in Cleveland provided by Superco (http://www.ridesuperco.com/2008/). We will allow the guys back in after 4 p.m. On Friday at 7 p.m. we’ll have a party at the Holiday Inn with snacks and beer from Subaru (http://www.subaru.com/?s_kwcid=subaru|2886211675) and Pabst Blue Ribbon. (http://www.dirtragmag.com/blogarific/www.pabstblueribbon.com/)

On Saturday and Sunday, Ray’s will be open to everyone, but women ride at half price. This is a great chance to practice your new skills and show the guys a thing or two. Last year, with little notice, nearly forty amateur and eight professional women riders participated in the Dirt Rag Women’s Weekend, and we look forward to this year being bigger and better than ever. Check out our Gallery (http://www.dirtragmag.com/gal/showgallery.php?cat=702) of photos from last year. Come out and have a great time!

If you plan on attending, please RSVP to rays@dirtragmag.com (rays@dirtragmag.com) (not necessary, but it will help us be prepared). If you’re traveling to Cleveland, don’t forget to visit www.raysmtb.com (http://www.dirtragmag.com/blogarific/www.raysmtb.com) for info on special deals at the Holiday Inn - Cleveland Airport! For more info go to www.dirtragmag.com (http://www.dirtragmag.com/blogarific/www.dirtragmag.com) or www.raysmtb.com (http://www.dirtragmag.com/blogarific/www.raysmtb.com).

I have RSVP'd for our entire group. Ladies, note that we ride for HALF PRICE (not free as it was last year). That's still cool. The reception party Friday night sounds like fun. AG has scoped out the local microbreweries we need to visit, and there is talk about a visit to the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame for those interested -- our dance card is filling up. Who is excited?! I know John and I are!

Wow, very cool all these people are going! I am planning on driving my truck with Neips, Dan L,and Adam S. We'll have 6 bikes in the bed of my truck and gear where ever we can find room. I can transport more bikes if someone has a hitch mount bike rack I could borrow. We are planning on leaving Friday morning sometime to get there for the evening ride.

I know there are a couple others that have expressed interest going that may be willing to drive or looking for a ride. If so, post up so you don't miss out.

There is still rooms in the Inn. Word on the street is rides are hard to come by. We need more people willing to drive that can take bikes.

John and I are taking our truck, but we can take more bikes if someone has a 2" trailer hitch rack. We are leaving Thursday morning quite early as I have unrelated business in Cleveland Thursday afternoon. I do have concerns about leaving extra bikes overnight on the rack off the back of the truck, albeit locked, in Cleveland. There won't be enough room in the hotel room (4 people and gear, 6 bikes).

Bexter, I have a 4-bike Thule rack that I used when we had the Explorer. Not sure on the size of the receiver...

It is a 1.5", but I have an adapter that can be used.

Bexter (or anyone else),

I have a Thule 2 bike carrier with locks and it fits a 2" hitch. I will not be going on the trip so someone can borrow it, just call me to arrange pickup in Bettendorf on Thurs. sometime. Cell - 630-215-5575

Thanks,

Jim, i talked with t bone on the phone earlier and he said you would be fine with him. give him a call.

sorry fellas, gonna stick to my original plans.

I will have room for 1 or 2, but I'm telling you the back seat of a Mazda will not be that fun after 4 hours let alone 8. Jim, as much fun as it would be to have you to ride up with...there ain't no f'in way. In that little car, you'd be like a raccoon stuck in a live trap.

No one who has gone before answered my earlier question...The Rules state you can't get off your bike at Ray's. Would it be worth it for me to bring a camera or camcorder or should I leave it behind?

OK! we are down to 6 days before we leave. Just wanted to recap the trip info.

I have plenty of rooms at the Holiday Inn. Price I posted put 4 people per room will each room having 2 queen sized beds. When we get there I will be at the front desk giving those rooms to who ever wants them. As soon as you take a room you will be responsible for paying for it. You will be able to buy you pass at the park, not at the hotel.
I gave Ray a heads up that we were all coming and asked him if we could still leave our bikes at the park. He said yes.
So with all that said, I will be at the Thunder Bay parking lot ready to leave by 8 am. Who ever wants to caravan up will see you there.
If there is any other questions feel free to post up, pm or call 5635291831.

They are very cool there, and won't bother you at all as long as your not disrupting the flow. I would say that rule is to keep kids from gathering in the middle of the "trail". Take your cameras, there is plenty of room to take pics and video.

So I called to rent bikes for Megan and I for this weekend and talked to a guy named Logan. Come to find out he is from the Quad Cities. I told him about the club and what we have done with the area. He hooked me up with one of the nicer rentals. I guess it's a small world after all. He sounded impressed we were bringing so many people. So who else is getting excited!

mtnbkn1, I have a deal for you. Me and my girl are flying in on Thursday, but flights look iffy on Sunday to get back home (my gf is a flight attendant so we fly stand-by for free). If you can drive us back to the QC on Sunday if flights get worse then you have yourself a room. Oh, and my girl friend says she'll kick you out if you snore. Let me know.

Gunchie, I may be able to drive you guys back. I may be buying a vehicle while in Ohio, so John and I would have 2 vehicles to drive home. But, that is only if I do like the vehicle after I test drive it. So, I'm not a guaranteed option -- just a possibility.

Oh, my, gawd, Becky... Ray's was a fantastic time, especially with such a fun group...

Favorite moments (in no particular order):
-Arriving Friday and riding hard after a 8+ hour drive.
-Watching Hank's dirty gym sock beer face whilst listening to Kings of Leon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCZfJ5ai07U) @ Brew Pub #1. Brooklyn Brown Ale was the way to go.
-Bart catching major air regardless of the bike he was on.
-FORC group session on the GF pump track.
-Eating approximately 2.5 pounds of pulled pork @ Brew Pub #4 (digestive system still not normal).
-Looking across the Ray's landscape during the night ride.
-Managing to squeeze in one last stoke before leaving... sessioning some skinny action with Peoria peoples and finally clearing all the medium jumps.

Was definitely running on empty that last run, legs "Elvis"ing all over the place. Sore as H-E-double hockey sticks today but oh so worth it.

Thanks for having me along, looking forward to the pics / vidz and whatever's next (http://www.qcforc.org/Forums/showthread.php?t=195)... http://www.lambaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=523

Everyone, what a blast! Thank YOU for making it so cool. We met fantastic people, enjoyed many o' skinnies, jumps and other assorted obstacles, consumed a cocktail or 10 and a periodic pulled pork sandwich or cheeseburger, rode, slept, rode, snacked, rode more, slept, drank, etc. I knew the trip would be fun, but it exceeded any expectation I had. AG, thanks for putting it all together and FORCers, thanks for being willing to go on "Ladies Weekend" for me! Great fun!! Go Rays!!

Ray's was friggin' sweet. I hope to remind you guys of that place every time we ride this year since I spent an entire paycheck on the clothes they had for sale. I think my wardrobe is set. I have yet to dig through the pics and vid I took while there...Hoping to make progress on that tomorrow. BTW, I need someone to help me figure out how to make this fancy camcorder I bought actually produce watchable videos...Anyone?

Okay...Ray's was great but am I the only one still coughing up black dust?!? I'm still trying to clear my lungs of the carcinogens I inhaled all weekend long. Wondering if I'm the only one...Maybe it was the dust or maybe it was the fact that I ran around tasted and shared beers this weekend with everyone like it was the first beer party I went to when I was 16. We're a lovey dovey sort a club, eh?

Until next year the memories of falling off the Red Bull wall and the 12 oz steak that is still stuck to my gut will have to last (Who orders a steak at noon from a place called Slim n Chubby's?!? BTW, still impressed by how Ol' Chubby takes it from Slim with a smile on his face...probably had to be there for that one).

i can't say that i am coughing up black stuff, but i have been coughing up stuff for a while now. even before rays. the **** i breathe on a daily basis has to be much worse than what ray had to offer us. i felt pretty good in there myself.

go out for a good cold ride and work yourself hard, you'll really start coughin **** up then. maybe it'll help. good luck with that.

Well, I once again failed to upload pix to the FORC site. I'm not sure what's wrong with me :kookoo: but I can never seem to get it to work. So....I started a shutterfly site where I'll drop all the pix I take this year. It's an easy site to use and anyone should be able to get on there and download my pics to keep for yourself (Sorry, ladies, no pictures of a shirtless Gunchie this time around). It turns out I took over 400 pictures last weekend. I did not post them all - you're welcome. The one's I kept are mostly decent but some are blurry as one might expect. You have to go all the way to the end of the slideshow to watch my unskilled butt fall off the Red Bull Wall. Oh, you might want the link to the site...It is
http://ryancannady.shutterfly.com/forcphotos

I welcome anyone that would like to share their photos and leave comments on this site as well. Sorry for not posting them on the FORC site.
